Lunch Made Easy: Halloween Ideas for Kids

'Twas the week of Halloween, as the children prepared.
Costumes and buckets and goodies to share.
There were scary ghoblins and spooky ghosts,
but the tiny princesses were eager most.
Going door to door, teal pumpkins in sight.
Clinching each other hands, in fear of a fright!

Just having a little Halloween fun. ;)
Growing up it was my favorite holiday. That's probably why I love making Halloween themed lunches for Little Miss so much. It has my tiny princess so excited for Friday night.

Our teal pumpkin is on our step, along with a teal sign hanging on our door. We plan on handing out glow sticks - it's all part of the #tealpumpkinproject. It encourages families to think of children with food allergies, intolerances, or even those with diabetes and feeding tubes, by handing out non-food treat options. No, it doesn't mean we're trying to ban candy all together... just offer a bowl of each! By placing a teal pupmkin on your porch or step, you're letting families know you have safe options for their kiddos.

Back to lunch... These are simple & creepy ideas that just take a little creativity and minimal time to create!

Here I created a "Boo! Bun Sandwich" using a leftover Udi's gluten, nut, dairy, & soy free hamburger bun. I just cut a little face out of it with a pairing knife to create our jack-o-lantern and filled it with SunButter & jelly.

Here the food picks & vampire teeth do all the work! Using another leftover Udi's bun, this time a hot dog bun, I made Little Miss and monster turkey sandwich but add creepy hand picks, vampire teeth, and those are actually olive stir sticks for the eyes.

Using the same creepy hand picks, some more vampire teeth, and an eyeball cupcake ring topper, a simple sandwich becomes a scary one eyed monster!

Here we turned our simple sandwich, made again with Udi's gluten, nut, soy, & dairy free bread and filled with SunButter & jelly, into a "pumpkin peekaboo" by cutting out a tiny pumpkin from the top slice exposing the jelly underneath.

Cut your sanwich into a circle instead and use the crust to create spider legs. The raisin eyes are held on with a dab of honey to act like "glue". Wrap a GoGo Squeez applesauce pouch in papertowel or tissue paper to create this mummy sauce with stick on eyes.

Add a Halloween Lunchbox Love Note for even more fun!

Here I spookified her pizzadilla (GF quesadilla with pizza fillings) but doing a ghost cutout on top to give it a fun effect.

Clever food picks and inexpensive spider rings can add so much fun to ordinary lunches!

  2. Great ideas! I particularly like the spider and applesauce mummy. My enthusiasm for making creative lunches waxes and wanes, but I did manage jack-o-lantern and skull sandwiches, and banana ghosts for lunch today. Happy Halloween! Teal pumpkins rule!
